Mum's First Year
1962, That very first year.

Once upon an official Mum Festival beginning,
...on Sunday, October 7, 1962, Opening Ceremonies
kicked off the celebration that has added to Bristol's
enjoyable autumn heritage. First Fall Festival Chairman
Ralph Joerres opened these ceremonies midst the
growing glory of Bristol Nurseries, naturally.

Meanwhile downtown, first Open House events
(which would become citywide traditions) were
welcoming Bristolites galore. ..at the American Clock
& Watch Museum, Bristol Water Co. and the newly
remodeled North Side Bank & Trust Company (now
Fleet Bank on North Main St .)

Mum Events were in colorful abundance: an Art
exhibit (Bristol Women's College Club); a Youth Block
Dance; a Square Dance; a Nationality Night Dance; a
Fashion Show; the Mum Festival Ball (Bristol Hospital
Auxiliary); the Miss Bristol competition (Bristol Jaycees);
a Drum Corps Marching competition; an Eastern vs
Malone Football game and Physical Fitness program
(Thomas Monahan); a Midget Football game; a
Manufacturing Exhibit; a Mum exhibit (Bristol Nurseries);
a Bristol Symphony Orchestra Music Night (AI Caruso,
Jr.); a CT Photographers exhibit (Bristol Press); and a
Swimming exhibition (Bristol Girls Club).
